RAMALLAH, April 10 (Xinhua) — Palestinian popular committees on Tuesday slammed Israel for planning to prevent hundreds of peace activists from reaching West Bank through Israel’s Ben Gurion airport.
The activists, mainly from Europe, would like to travel to West Bank to participate in a peaceful demonstration against Israeli occupation and the expansion of Jewish settlements.
“Israel insists to obstruct any international activity in support of the Palestinian cause,” said Jamal Jom’a, coordinator of the popular committees in Ramallah’s villages.
Israel declared that it has completed preparations to deal with the fly-in campaign, dubbed Welcome to Palestine, which is due to land in the airport by the end of the week.
Israel Radio quoted police sources as saying that authorities will deal firmly with the activists to prevent any provocative scenes.
Western campaigners succeeded in their first flights to the West Bank through Israel in 2010, but Israel curbed the second trip in 2011, arresting and later deporting the activists.
